Inspiration can strike in odd places. As another idea popped into my head while I was riding my horse yesterday, I thought about some of the strange places I've written. Here are my top 5:
1. At a motor racing circuit. I volunteer as a race marshal in my spare time, and an idea came to me while watching cars drive around the track. That day, I managed to write a short story in between races.
2. On a boat between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. I love to scuba dive, and there's always downtime between dives. There's nothing nicer than tapping out a chapter on a gently rocking boat, although the sun does make the iPad a bit hot! Ironically, my book about diving was written with both feet firmly on dry land.
3. At a particularly dull family lunch. Don't you hate being stuck at one end of the table while the conversation happens at the other? Usually I do, but that day I was grateful because I managed to jot a piece of flash fiction down on my phone in between courses.
4. On the train. Not so strange, maybe, except I was standing up in the aisle, trying desperately not to lose my balance every time the driver slowed for a station.
5. The airport departure lounge. Oh, what a wonderful place for inspiration. A number of people I've observed while waiting (and waiting, and waiting) for flights have found their way into my stories in one shape or form.
Where is the strangest place you've written or read?
