The Blue Hole is a curved bay a few miles outside Dahab, and in the middle of the reef table, there's a sinkhole that plunges 112 metres straight down.
It's one of the most popular spots for free divers and scuba divers alike, but it's also dangerous. A walk past the memorial wall on the way to the El Bells entrance is a stark reminder of that.
A little industry has grown up around it, with cafés, shops, souvenir sellers, and camel rides.
Look out to sea, and you can see the Hijaz Mountains in Saudi Arabia on the other side of the Gulf of Aqaba.
Drive back from the Blue Hole along the coastal road, and you'll see the Assalah shoreline curving away from you to the left.

And if you get lucky, you might even spot a boat lurking over the reef table, waiting for…well, you'll have to read the book to find out 😉
